Find more movies that help kids build character. When alone in the wilderness, Ricky and Hector start to become a dysfunctional family unit. While any critic worth his salt (or at least frequent doses of caffeine) will not to let that inform actual opinions or thoughts on a movie, it can preface the nicest of surpriseslike Taika Waititi's endlessly charming Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Affectionately called "Uncle Hec" by Ricky Baker, Uncle Hec serves not only as Ricky's mentor, but as the co-protagonist of the story. The audience witnesses this physical transformation in little ways throughout the movie, like when he becomes more talkative. It also helps that Ricky has now become famous, so he knows that Kahus family is really on his side. Spitting. As Hec chops wood, Ricky tells him that he wants to stay there, but Hec says that he can't, "Not without a woman to run the show." Ricky is just starting to get used to his new "auntie" and "uncle" when circumstances leave Ricky and Hec on their own. That includes spitting at people, burning peoples letter boxes, shoplifting, spraying graffiti on buildings and running away from foster care. The movie boasts a wry cast of supporting characters, such as the Child Welfare officer Paula (the formidable Paula House), who stalks Ricky like a comic version of Inspector Javert. He tries to devise any reason to stay with Hec, coming up with a bunch of different ideas for what they could do, before finally begging to go along with Hec on a journey into the wilderness. //
